The Cultural divide of St.Martin/St.Maarten

This blog will focus on the island of St. Martin/St. Maarten. This island is the cite of a cultural clash. Between the French St. Martin and the Dutch St. Maarten, the island holds a highly diverse mixing pot of cultural aspects.

The map above shows the current borders of the island which is almost equally divided between the two countries. These borders were not just thought up and agreed on.
The real story behind the agreement between the borders is actually quite hysterical. It is said that a French and Dutch general met on the eastern side of the island where the borders meet. Here they decided that each group would drink together then walk the beaches around the island. When they met again they would draw the borderlines and connect them; the French side was to be the northern half while the Dutch got the southern half. The French ended up getting more land because the alcohol they drank was wine while the Dutch drank Rum then had to sleep the drunkenness off before continuing.
